How in the World Do People Save Money?

Saving money is a hard task to master. It always seems that when things come up, there goes your savings. Many people I know never have any savings to start with.

Saving money is the cornerstone of a successful money management plan. Without an emergency savings when my husband recently was laid off, we would have been up a creek. Even with the emergency savings, things were very tight and we had to call our bank for assistance.

Now we face the task that many people face. Starting over with our savings.

It seems simple to say. You just put your extra money into savings. Wrong.

There really isn’t such a thing as extra money. You may have found that out by now. If you are spending, you have no extra money. If you have debt, you have no extra money.

Where you find savingmoney is through having a simple budget. Your budget will identifiy money for savings. It is hard to start saving. But once you start, you form a habit that lasts.

Start with identifying why you want to save money. Set short-term and long-term financial goals. In the short-term, you may want to buy a new couch. In the long-term, you might want to retire early. These are the goals that make saving worth a little sacrifice.

Give your goals dollar amounts and time frames. When you know that you only need to put back $100 a month, it is much easier than focusing on the $3,000 you need to save. Write down your goals and refer to them at least once a week. Track your progess and keep it as your number one priority.

You will eventually find that when you go to buy things, you are thinking that if you don’t spend as much, you will be closer to your goal. What a nice thought that is. You will find that not spending feels better than being guilty after spending.

Make sure you have a separate savings account. We like to tell ourselves that we can leave a cushion amount in our checking. We can’t. If it is there, we spend it. If you put your savings in your checking, you will dip into it. Have your savings in a separate account that you can watch grow.

If you don’t already have a budget, you need to make one. You will be able to identify areas where you can cut back your spending.

A lot of people have trouble identifying how much they should put into savings each month. This simply depends on your goals and finances. If you have a lot of debt that you need to pay down, you may be saving less. If you have your debt paid off, you may be saving more. Look to how much your budget says you can save. Don’t get caught up in percentages. The only time I use them is when we have bonus or unexpected money. In that case, we get a small percentage as free spending money. The rest goes into savings.

The best way to set up your savings habit is to not have to even think about it. Have the saving amount automatically debited from your checking and deposited directly into your savings account. You don’t ever see the money, which makes the temptation disappear.

There are no real secrets to saving. You simply have to find a method that works for you. It is hard to live with no savings. Especially the emergency savings that protect you from broken down vehicles, financial mistakes and job losses. We are frantically trying to build our savings back up, because we know how important they really are.

Still enjoying life, while saving money

People tend to go crazy on mall wide sales, or join the occasion shopping rush, without even thinking that those things on sale are actually not an immediate need or want, it just so happens that it was put on sale, so you buy it. Then you’ll ask everyone else why you’re losing so much cash, why you don’t have enough savings, etc., but when they say or tell you to start saving money, you start rolling your eyes, singing unintelligible tones, etc.

Actually, when you really think about it, saving money doesn’t only mean that you have to really allocate a portion of your disposable income periodically, you can also start cutting your extra expenses or your very expensive bills and costs. It’s just a matter of retraining your thoughts and mind to what is really important and practical.

You can still enjoy a happy and creative lifestyle without spending so much. It doesn’t mean that when you live on less, you are making your life miserable. Through the following examples, you’ll see that saving money is really not that difficult or brain-racking after all. Besides directly depositing your money (which is the best way to save), you can actually take some simple daily steps to cut expenses like: (1) choosing vegetables over meat — healthier yet less costly, (2) put aside small bills and coins — you’ll soon forget them but they’re actually accumulating and adding into hundreds of dollars, (3) haggle for the best rate or price — when you canvass and shop for rates, companies and vendors will surely drop their prices, (4) don’t shop through catalogs — they are way too expensive, try shopping in online bargain sites instead, (5) avoid paying unnecessary fees and charges — no need to pay a professional if you can actually do it, and there are so many more ways you can think of to save money by cutting your avoidable expenses.

Saving money is a daily responsibility which everyone can actually do, it’s a matter of determining and distinguishing your needs and wants, prioritizing your needs, and paying only what is due. Why should you pay more for what’s worth less? Why do you have to buy a designer-labeled dress, when you can get the same style in a cheaper brand? Why spend a very expensive dinner when you can buy a whole week’s consumption at that same cost?

When you start doing this money saving ways, you’ll see how people would also follow, just make it a habit and you’ll see how an inexpensive lifestyle can become a happy and easy way of life. And of course, remember that you need to start saving money today, so refresh your old-school thinking and gear your thoughts to a more productive, stylish, and inexpensive lifestyle.

Energy savings equals money savings

When you think of savings, it doesn’t only refer to saving money for a future need; a much more immediate need of saving is the energy and resources. Energy savings should be in the mindset of everyone, especially if you still have a considerate heart and mind for the environment and the resources.

Many would not of course feel such demand and pressure on energy savings because they thought and believe that they will not get affected by this. Well, they thought wrong. Resources are depleting and diminishing by the second, yet some are still not concerned enough to adjust and help. One has to reckon that energy savings equals money savings. The more you save energy, the lesser your bill is, so it’s actually a win-win situation.

If there are money saving tips, there are also guidelines on energy savings. Even if you feel that you’re only saving a little of the energy used in your homes, if these energy savings will be added to the rest of the energy savings in your neighborhood, community, and city, it surely results to a huge percentage of the overall energy savings of the place. You don’t really have to do such drastic measures in order to save energy, just do a little of everything and it will do a lot in the end. When you think of ways to save and conserve energy, there’s no better place to start than your home. Consider electricity — your heating and cooling systems, appliances, and lighting for starters. Remember that you can save more when you “turn on and turn off” the appliances, lights, etc., compared to leaving it on the whole time. Make sure that your old appliances are replaced with new ones which have the energy-efficiency label on it, because most old appliances are consuming and using more energy than the new ones. Use systems and items that absorb or consume less wattages or energy. Unplug appliances if not in use, or plug it to power-saving devices like a power bar so that you can easily turn it off, and stop the appliances from drawing energy. Clean appliances like refrigerators, stoves, etc., as often as possible. Repair all leakages, holes, etc., immediately. And there are so many more ways to save electricity and energy, but one of the most important thing is that proper information and understanding should be inculcated in everyone’s mind, because all your efforts are futile if you are the only one doing it while other family members are not. Energy savings will truly be worth it if everybody does his share.

Remember that when you save energy, you are also saving money, plus you are saving the environment as well.
